Roslavl

Roslavl is one of the most ancient towns in Smolensk, the official date of foundation of which is 1137. It is situated on a high picturesque hill at a distance of 102 km to the South of Smolensk.

The town was founded by the Smolensk prince Rostislav Mstislavitch. The fortress of Roslavl Burzevo Hill is situated in the central part of the modern town. The history of the ancient land of Roslavl is connected with the ancestor of Romanovs' dynasty.

The Church of Transfiguration founded in the XVI century draws tourists' attention. An appealing center is the art-historic museum of the town, situated in the building of the inn. F.I. Tutchev, whose family tree is connected with Roslavl, stood here more than once.

The author of the monument «The Millennium of Russia» M.O. Mikeshin, architect S.T. Konenkov, poet N.I. Rilenkov were born in Roslavl..
