Vjazma

Vjazma is situated at a distance of 145 km North-East of Smolensk. For the first time the name of the town was mentioned in 1239. Skilled craftsmen erected unique temples here. And even nowadays the stone Church of our Lady Hodegetria with three domes admires us. It is included in the architectural complex of the Church of John the Forerunner, which was founded in the XVI century.
For several centuries Vjazma rose to the defense of Russia. This ancient town remembers numerous battles with Lithuanians and Poles. Vjazma did not avoid the smoke of fires of the Civil war of 1812. Thousands of soldiers died on cruel battles in Vjazma in the tragic years of (1941–1945) of the Great Patriotic war. Vjazma is the birthplace of admiral P.S. Nahimov.
A private museum devoted to Sergey Esenin is opened in the town. A museum of regional studies also works here. The reserve-museum «Hmelita» is situated at a distance of 30 km from Vjazma.
The cognitive, pilgrimage, rural, hunting and fishing tours are of the most interest in Vjazma.
